Wildfire Resiliency and Prevention Grant Round
The California wildfires have been horrifically destructive this year, and our beloved state parks have undergone devastating damages. We know there will be an incredible need to restore fragile habitats and rebuild parks, while building climate resiliency to mitigate the impact of climate change for the preservation and protection of state parks.
Applications are due Friday, December 18, 2020 by 11:59 PM. Award notification will be made the week of January 18, 2021.
Goal
Support activities in state parks to protect against and respond to impact of climate change currently jeopardizing the state park system.
Grant Terms and Timeline:

Funding criteria:
Eligible entities to apply:

501(c)(3) non-profit
-
Organizations with a contractual relationship with California Department of Parks and Recreation, which may include concessionaires, cooperating associations or other partners.

California Department of Parks and Recreation or other governmental institutions are eligible.
Applying Entity:

Preference will be given to organizations, programs or projects led by communities of color and/or indigenous communities. These projects should promote inclusive decision making and consider the disproportionate burdens of climate change on disadvantaged communities.

Preference will be given to organizations with annual operating budgets of less than $500,000.
Park:
-
Benefit one or more California state park.
-
Preference to parks affected by wildfires or other climate change events within the past 5 years.
Proposal:
Preference will be given to programs or projects that take place in parks most threatened by climate change. We are measuring this by communities that score 51-100% on the CalEnviroScreen map.
Proposed project or program should address one or more of the following:

Assessment – Assess fire impact and climate threats to the park, risks to natural habitats, biodiversity and parklands (both built and natural environments). Grant activities may include, but not limited to support post-fire recovery plans, general/project plans for climate impacts and climate response, surveys and assessments to identify and prioritize climate resiliency projects.

Restoration – Restore the natural and built environments impacted by fires and other climate change events. Grant activities may include, but not limited to restoring native species, stabilizing trails/hillsides, rebuilding campgrounds, historic and working structures.

Preparedness – Prepare for the real threat of climate change in parks and build a climate resilient California. Grant activities may include, but not limited to wildfire prevention work, removal of invasive species, clearing brush/ overgrowth, creating defensible space.

Education – Raise awareness of impact of climate change and ways to engage in climate resilience activities. Grant activities may include, but not limited to educational materials, highlights impact of climate change, what Californians can do make a more climate resilient California.
