Published: August 5, 2024

In celebration of August’s National Make-A-Will Month, we had an amazing opportunity to interview John Mott, son of California State Parks Foundation’s founder, William Penn Mott, Jr. Our planned giving society, named the William Penn Mott, Jr. Legacy Society in honor of John's father, highlights the enduring legacy of dedication to California's state parks.

John has dedicated his life to the stewardship and preservation of California's state parks, embodying a legacy of passion and commitment. From his early days as a seasonal worker at Malakoff Diggins State Park in 1971 to his influential leadership role in Sacramento, John has witnessed the profound impact California State Parks Foundation has on the state parks system.

"When it comes to my favorite state park, it's always the one I'm currently visiting," says John. "In the early spring, I marvel at the wildflower bloom in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. During summer, I enjoy the majestic old-growth redwoods of the North Coast redwood parks. Come fall, I head to the Sierra parks to savor the vibrant fall colors and crisp mountain air." For him, California state parks embody the state's diverse natural beauty and offer unparalleled health and recreational benefits.

His deep appreciation for the organization's support of state parks motivates him to include California State Parks Foundation in his estate plans. "California State Parks Foundation has been a trusted partner to state park staff, providing critical resources through their volunteer program and grants," John says. He believes that California State Parks Foundation's advocacy and capacity-building efforts are crucial, especially since state park staff are limited in their ability to advocate for themselves.

John envisions his legacy gift as a means to ensure California State Parks Foundation's continued support for state parks, particularly in building climate resilience and increasing access for all Californians. He hopes his contribution will help California State Parks Foundation stand up to future challenges and secure the long-term sustainability of the parks.

"A legacy should aim to expand one's capacity to love," he says, hoping to leave a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable state park system through his gift.

His passion extends to the volunteer work at Fort Ord Dunes State Park, where California State Parks Foundation volunteers assist local park staff in collecting seeds from rare and endangered plants. He also values California State Parks Foundation's role as an advocate for state parks, ensuring they have a voice in Sacramento and beyond.

Reflecting on his journey, he shares, "California state parks are the best of California, and everyone should feel welcome and able to participate in the wonders they offer." He remains committed to supporting California State Parks Foundation in ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same natural and cultural treasures.

John's story is a powerful testament to the impact of dedication and foresight in preserving California's state parks. His commitment to including California State Parks Foundation in his estate plans highlights the critical role planned giving plays in ensuring these parks remain vibrant and accessible for future generations.
