Marketing and Communications Intern | Cal Parks

California State Parks Foundation is seeking a talented and motivated Marketing and Communications Intern to assist with the organization’s overall marketing and communications portfolio. The Marketing and Communications Intern is an essential team member and strongly focuses on creating content that brings key themes and stories to life via digital and social media. The Marketing and Communications Intern is responsible for creating informative and innovative social media and website content, supporting the implementation of a robust social media strategy, and creating digital assets. The ideal candidate must be able to multi-task, work in team and independent settings, and have writing, editing, design, and organizational skills. Ideal candidates also have a passion for California state parks and public lands or a willingness to gain a deeper connection with the outdoors.

Responsibilities: 

  • Create and schedule content as part of California State Parks Foundation’s social media communications plan via Hootsuite.  
  • Support creation of social videos for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts with travel to state parks.  
  • Support execution of the email marketing by programming and testing email builds 
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to improve organizational Digital Asset Management (DAM) standards and systems 
  • Support organizational website through tasks such as writing and editing content, creating graphics, and creating blog posts. Create social media content to drive viewership of updated content on website.  
  • Gather and analyze figures for marketing metrics, with a focus on social media.  
  • Attend meetings, if available.  
  • Provide project-based or general support to the marketing team, as needed.  

Requirements: 

  • Actively pursuing or recently received a degree in communications, or have relevant work experience in marketing, content creation, or another related field. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.  
  • Strong MS Word and MS Excel skills. Familiarity with other Microsoft Office applications and the software Asana a plus but not required.  
  • Experience with editing graphic and video content in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other editing software. 
  • Prior experience creating content for a brand social media account is a plus, but not required.  
  • Interest in the social media and digital marketing sector.  
  • Creative approach to tasks.  
  • Professional, positive attitude.

  • Open to learning new skills and trying new things. 
  • Commitment to California State Parks Foundation’s mission. 
  • Able to attend events or make on-site visits to parks, sometimes on weekends or evenings, as necessary. California driver’s license preferred. 
  • Able to work at a computer for long periods of time, work in and move across an office setting, communicate with colleagues and constituents, and occasionally move items up to 25 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

COMPENSATION: This is a part-time, non-exempt, 15-20 hours per week position through June 30, 2025, with possible extension for a full 6-month term. The hourly range for this position is $15 - $18 per hour, based on experience. We offer the following benefits to interns: pro-rated sick time off accrual; and pro-rated monthly data and cell stipend.  

During the term, the intern will be provided with a laptop and necessary home office equipment such as a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. They will also be provided with access to necessary software applications. Any required travel will be reimbursed.
