Underwater State Parks!

What a way to kick off summer and enjoy the months ahead! Experience a State Park in a totally different way...under water! If you are a diver there are several options, just visit www.parks.ca.gov and enter “underwater parks” in the search block.

Columbia Diggin’s 1852, Columbia SHP, 4 miles North of Sonora via Hwy 49

Hundreds of volunteers and the staff of Columbia State Historic Park put a great deal of effort and research into this event, to depict as accurately as possible, the original town. Live music, gambling and games of the period provide the visitors the opportunity to travel back to 1852. Experience the sights, smells and sounds of the early tent town that sprung up as gold was discovered in a local streambed, later to become the town of Columbia. Civil War Days, Angel Island SP, San Francisco Bay
June 7, 2008 - June 8, 2008

Relive a day in 1864 when Camp Reynolds was established by the Union Army to defend San Francisco Bay from Confederate Rebels. This event is tentative so heck the Angel Island website at www.angelisland.org and click on “Events”. Plan to arrive early and enjoy a hike around the island. Ferry ticket includes park fee. June 7 and 8 (TENATIVE)

Revisit the exciting and controversial hydraulic gold mining era of the 1870’s! Enjoy blue grass music by Mountain Laurel, barbecue picnic, wagon rides, craft demonstrations, candle making and tin punching. Games and storytelling make this a day for the entire family. 15th Annual Festival at the Cement Ship, Seacliff SB, 5.5 miles South of Santa Cruz

Celebrate the unique history of the WW1 Concrete Ship Palo Alto, the natural wonders of Seacliff’s fossil beds and the many animals that call the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary their home. Civil War Days at Fort Tejon SHP, 37 miles South of Bakersfield on I-5

Watch volunteers present skirmishes and demonstrate the tactics used in the eastern United States during the American Civil War. See troops of the Union and Confederate Armies, all authentically uniformed and equipped. Meet the soldiers & civilians. Tour their camps and see how they lived. Living History presentations include Manual of Arms, Artillery and Field Hospital demonstrations. BATTLES ON SUNDAY ONLY! 10:30am, noon and 1:30pm. “Full Moon Madness”, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, off Hwy 9 in Felton
June 14, 2008

Annual Juneteenth Celebration, Colonel Allensworth SHP, 8 miles West of Earlimart

Join us for the annual celebration. There's plenty of sunshine for those who love warm weather. This day is celebrated by African Americans in honor of their ancestors who received notice of being set free from slavery later (June 19th) than the majority of salves elsewhere in the country. There's great entertainment, great speakers and, of course, a fabulous tour of the historic buildings given free by the Friends of Allensworth volunteers for your educational experience. Tide Pool Exploration, San Elijo SB, on old Hwy 101 in Cardiff


Start summer by exploring the tide pools at San Elijo SB. The best time to explore is from one to two hours prior to an extremely low tide. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit this area. Call to check the schedule of tide pool walks, which can be either guided or self-guided. (760) 753-5091.
