“Butterfly Trees”, Pismo State Beach, located in Oceano off Hwy 1

Whale Watching!, Sonoma Coast SB, Bodega Head (west lot), 3095 Hwy 1, Bodega Bay

View the whales as they migrate along the coast. Volunteers are usually on hand to answer questions on weekend afternoons. Free.

Winter Fun! , Donner Memorial SP, Donner Pass Rd., 2 miles West of Truckee
February 1, 2009 - February 28, 2009

Enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes on ungroomed trails…all part of the winter fun at Donner Memorial SP. While you are there take the time to visit the Emigrant Trail Museum, open daily 9am – 4pm except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Elephant Seal Walks, Año Nuevo SR, 30 miles South of Half Moon Bay on Hwy 1

Visitors are guided on a 3-mile, 2.5-hour walk through sand dunes, to watch elephant seals in their natural environment. Walks take place every day, rain or shine. Call for any exceptions. Reservations for the December 15, 2007-March 31, 2008 breeding season are necessary. (800) 444-4445. No tours on December 25, 2008. Between 8:45am and 2pm.

California Western Monarch Day, Pismo SB, 2 miles south of the city of Pismo Beach on Hwy 1

The Pismo Beach habitat is believed to be the largest in the Western United States. It is a wonderful site to behold huge pods of thousand of colorful butterflies gathered in "their" eucalyptus tree grove. Hundreds more are happily flittering about in the sunlight. Annual Sacramento Museum Day, Capital City of Sacramento

Twenty-four participating museums, including State Parks sites such as the California State Indian Museum, Sutter’s Fort SHP, and the California State Railroad Museum will be open free of charge from 10am to 5pm (last admissions at 4pm). California State Capitol Museum Tours, California State Capitol Museum, downtown Sacramento, N Street entrance

Tour this landmark in California history, home of California Legislature since 1869. Guided tours are scheduled daily from 9am to 4pm with an additional tour at 4:30pm, year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. (916) 324-0333.

Monterey State Historic Park served as California's capital under Spanish, Mexican and U.S. rule. The U.S. flag was first officially raised in California here on July 7, 1846, bringing 600,000 square miles, including California, into the Union. Ten buildings, including the Custom House, built in 1827, and California's First Theatre (1846-47), and several residences (now museums) built in the 1830s; preserve the area's rich history of early California.
