Trails, scenic vistas of fast water boiling over massive granite ledges, historic toll crossings and bridges all tell a story of day-to-day life during the Gold Rush era. California State Parks own some 2,000 acres along the South Yuba River, and approximately 9,000 acres are under federal jurisdiction. Opening weekend for the 25th consecutive year of excursion train operations on the Museum’s Sacramento-Southern Railroad! Beginning this weekend, and continuing every weekend through September, experience the sights, smells, and sounds of a real, working steam locomotive as it pulls vintage passenger coaches and converted freight cars along the levees of the Sacramento River. Regular steam-powered excursion trains depart Saturdays and Sundays, on-the-hour 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., from the Central Pacific Freight Depot in Old Sacramento. Climb aboard for a relaxing 40-minute, 6-mile roundtrip ride. Special afternoon Wildflower Train departs from the Railtown Depot at 4:30 p.m. these two Saturdays only! Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The train features Interpretive Park Rangers from the New Melones Recreation Resource Center, who answer questions and point out flower groupings along the way (subject to seasonal variations). En route, a stop will be made to allow guests to spread wildflower seeds along the tracks! Tickets are $10 adults, $4 youths ages 6-17, ages 5 and under ride free. Join the Big River Stewards program of the Mendocino Land Trust and the Mendocino Woodlands Camp Association for a Earth Day work weekend at Big River and the Mendocino Woodlands state parks on April 26th and 27th

Come stay a night at the historic Mendocino Woodlands Camp in the redwoods and help with restoration projects at Big River. Or just join us for the day.
Complimentary lodging will be provided to volunteers in rustic private cabins at the Mendocino Woodlands Camp, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.
On the Saturday workday (11am-4pm) we’ll remove invasive English Ivy from a mature stand of redwoods bordering Big River near Railroad Gulch.
On Saturday night, a complimentary dinner will be served in the historic Camp One dining hall.
On Sunday, April 27th, after a complimentary breakfast and check-out, volunteers will head to Big River Beach to remove invasive Ammophila (or European Beach Grass) from this scenic beach located between the Big River estuary and the historic village of Mendocino. Help us to finish removing the remaining “old-growth” ammophila and treat resprouts too.
